The purpose.To improve the competitiveness of rail transport authors propose to develop in Ukraine railway tourism. The aim of the paper is the development of new theoretical and methodological approach to the determination of the cost-effectiveness of rail trips, with which it would be possible to take into account all the costs of tourism campaigns to determine the actual net income from tourism services. Methods. The authors propose a new method for determining the cost-effectiveness of rail excursions. It will take into account the revenues from additional transportation and organization and maintenance costs of these journeys. Additional costs include: travel expenses through the narrow railway tracks in the forward and reverse communication with regard to the power train; projected costs to pay for excursions, included in the trip ticket; projected expenses for food tourists; projected living expenses of tourists in hotels; projected costs of road transport to transport tourists from the railway hotels or to places of tourist services. The Results. As a result of research activities proposed by the authors is expected to increase passenger traffic on the railroad, improving the image of Ukrainian railways within the country and abroad, to attract additional funds to upgrade outdated infrastructure and rolling stock, restoration of objects of cultural and historical significance, the creation of new jobs, curb migration processes in western Ukraine. Scientific novelty. In the article the authors first developed a theoretical and methodological approach to the determination of the economic efficiency of short rail trips, independent and combined multi-day hiking trips, using existing railway lines, which takes into account the cost of transportation of tourists by rail, road transfers, the cost of all kinds of excursions, meals in restaurants, accommodation in hotels. This will increase the efficiency of the tourism companies. The practical significance. As a result, the authors proposed the use of a technique may increase the profitability of private tourist campaigns and public carriers.
